Handball: Historical Portugal

Portugal reaches a historic milestone at this year’s European EHF 2020. The Portuguese team finished sixth in the competition after losing 29-27 to their German counterpart – two-time European champion, three-time world champion and one Olympic champion.

The game, closely contested by both teams, was intense throughout its duration, with Portugal trailing by one goal at half-time by 14-13. The German team was unable to differentiate the result by more than three goals, having lost pace in the final minutes, but never the lead.

Despite the defeat, Portugal secured the best classification ever in the European Handball Championships.

The last best classification was seventh place at EHF Euro 2000.

Olympic Qualification

With the positive performance of the European, Portugal guaranteed its presence in the Olympic qualification games to be played from April 17th to 19th, where 6 teams will be able to participate in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

“It will be very tough. We will depend a lot on the clubs. If the players are physically prepared, we will be able to compete with anyone”, declared Paulo Pereira, National Handball Coach.

Olympic Table Tennis

Portugal once again guaranteed its presence in the Olympic Games, this time in Tokyo 2020, by beating Belgium 3-0, in the qualifying tournament in Gondomar.

In the team match, Tiago Apolónia and João Monteiro beat Belgians Florent Lambiet and Martin Allegro 3-1 – 12-10, 11-6, 8-11 and 13-11.

In singles, Maros Freitas beat Cedric Nuytick 3-2 and João Monteiro, Martin Allegro 3-0.

With this victory, Portugal guaranteed not only its presence in the team tournament but also two members of the national team in men’s individual events.

In the last Olympic Games, Rio 2016, the Austrian team eliminated Portugal while Marcos Freitas finished in fifth place.
